Molds in Manufacturing

There are many different manufacturing processes that require the use of molds to produce a finished product. Everything from plastic bottles to medical supplies are manufactured using molds. In this article we’ll explore the different kinds of molds used in manufacturing today.

Molds in LSR/LIM Molding

One area in manufacturing using molds is the Liquid Silicone Rubber/Liquid Injection Molding (LSR/LIM) niche. Products produced using LSR/LIM include baby bottle nipples, non-stick baking liners, medical products, etc. The molds used in this industry are complicated and present several different kinds of design challenges. First, Liquid Silicone Rubber has an extremely low viscosity. This means that if the product is not produced in the correct temperature or in a rigidly constructed mold it could flash. It is important to also consider the vacuumization, ejection and venting when producing LSR molds, according to Sherry L. Baranek in her article LSR/LIM Molding: A Unique Niche. metal is defined basically as flattened metal. It’s precisely what it sounds like, metal flattened into sheets. Some metals used to produce sheet metal are cold rolled steel, mild steel, nickel, titanium, aluminum, brass, tin, and copper.

Molds in Injection Molding

In the process of Injection Molding, which is used widely for producing plastic parts such as beverage bottles and other plastic containers, there are two main types of molds: Hot Runner and Cold Runner. The two major types of Cold Runner molds are two plate and three plate molds. The names are pretty indicative of the description. Two Plate molds separate into two halves with one parting plane. A three plate mold has two parting planes and separates into three sections when ejecting a part or product. Hot runner molds are simply two plate molds with a heated runner inside one half of the mold. So now you have a very base understanding of what types of molds are used in manufacturing some of the products that you use everyday. Molds are used in many different areas of manufacturing in a variety different industries.
